he Department of Sociology at Sumitranandan Pant Government Degree College, Garur is a vibrant academic department under the Faculty of Arts. Since the establishment of the college in 2006, the department has been committed to providing quality education in Sociology and helping students understand the structure, functions, and dynamics of society. The department offers Sociology as a subject in the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programme under Soban Singh Jeena University, Almora.
The Department of Sociology focuses on developing students’ understanding of social institutions, culture, social change, gender issues, rural and urban society, social stratification, globalization, and contemporary social challenges. Through classroom teaching, field studies, surveys, seminars, and interactive discussions, students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical insights into social realities.
Situated in the culturally rich and geographically diverse region of Garur, the department provides students with opportunities to study the social, cultural, and economic life of the Himalayan communities. Field visits and community-based learning enable students to understand local traditions, social development, and the challenges faced by rural society.
